In San Diego’s beloved Balboa Park, just north of downtown, there is a beautiful and slightly hidden rose garden. It is worth checking out if you like roses or want a quick escape if there are crowds in the park. Because of San Diego’s weather, roses bloom nearly year round. So while June is National Rose Month, making it a fitting time to visit, but any time of year is a good time to visit. So with the exception of January/February when they get pruned all the way back, you can find roses in bloom. This is a treat for out of town guest visiting from colder climates to visit the rose garden in Balboa Park.
The garden itself is located east of the main part of the park, just east of the Natural History Museum and the big fountain by Park Blvd. There is a foot bridge that crosses Park Blvd. that makes getting to the rose garden easy. Because it is on the other side of the street, San Diego’s Rose Garden is a hidden gem.
It is a low time commitment and it always feels like a treat no matter how many times I’ve wandered through the rose garden. The beauty and the delicious smells are good for my soul.
The Mary Rose is an Heirloom English Rose Bush. It is compact and healthy and requires little extra care. The scent of this rose is beautiful. Mary Rose is named after Henry VIII’s Flagship.
